Located in the Arcata High School library, the Career and College Center is open 25 hours a week, Monday through Friday (see above), and serves Arcata High, Six Rivers Charter High and Pacific Coast High schools. The Center houses an extensive resource collection as well as two computers for student use. Students can make two appointments per semester to visit the Center during classtime to consult with the coordinator and research information about future choices after high school. In addition, the Center is open for drop-in visits during lunch, which are not counted against the semester total.
The Center also sponsors three annual events which it invites juniors and seniors to attend: the Grad Panel, Job Shadow Day, and the Career Technical Panel. Events are advertised in the daily bulletin and on the Career & College News page of this website. In addition to these major events, the coordinator, in conjunction with the Guidance Department, also presents an informational meeting to parents of junior students during the fall. The evening program is designed for college-bound students and provides information and guidelines to help prepare students and their parents to meet the challenges of the college application process during senior year. Finally, the Center sponsors occasional lunchtime Career Informational Meetings, held in the library. These informal presentations are advertised in the bulletin and feature representatives from a wide array of job classifications.
Be sure to spend some time perusing the pages on the Center's website. Each one offers a wealth of links related to college and career research, as well as information regarding foreign exchange opportunities, "gap year" options, and summer programs.
Arcata High and Pacific Coast students sign up for appointments on the Center’s clipboard in the AHS Attendance office. Six Rivers Charter High School students sign up on the Career and College sheet in room 704. Parents can also make appointments with the coordinator. AHS staff are welcome to stop by and arrange for presentations of certain material in their classrooms, pick up handouts for class projects, or check out hardcopy resources.
Finally, eighty percent of the staff-time budget is obtained from fundraisers and private donations. If you would like to make a donation to the Center, please contact the coordinator at the phone number or email listed at the top of this page.
